Due to its great location, the lovely little town of Quakertown has seen steady population growth over the years and currently has a population of almost 9,300 residents. Originally that was due to the onset of the railroad industry here. Still, with the automobile industry taking center stage, the same great location led to 4 major state highways being built, all easily accessible to Quakertown. The busy state highway, Route 309 runs right through the town and has led to extensive smaller malls being developed along the highway, populated by numerous restaurants, businesses, and retail outlets. Quakertown sits on2 square miles and 21 miles of roads.
Historic Quakertown
Quakertown has a rich history, still highlighted today by its numerous downtown landmarks. In fact, you can do a self–guided tour that consists of 24 stops in uptown Quakertown, and 11 stops in downtown Quakertown.
There are many other historic places in Quakertown that tourists and residents frequent, including:
- Sine’s 5 & 10. This unique shopping experience has been serving Quakertown for over 100 years, and features a soda fountain, an inventory of various candies, hardware, houseware, toys, crafts, and gifts, and has over 200 model airplanes hanging from the ceiling, a 200-foot model train track, and a year-round Christmas room. Breakfast, lunch, milkshakes, and sundaes are also served at this one–of–a–kind store.
- McCoole’s Tavern at the historic Red Lion Inn. The Inn opened in 1740 and has an incredibly rich history of visitors. It is now a “ colonial gastropub with upscale dining” in an incredible, back-in-time atmosphere. The present-day Birch Beer was once a famous colonial drink here, and its formula was guarded secretly for years.
- Richland Library Company. Established way back in 1788, today it is focused on preserving items of genealogical and local interest.
- Spinnerstown Hotel. Serving the community since 1750, David Spinner purchased a license to operate a tavern here in 1811. This wonderful dining experience features a rustic tap room, a more formal dining room, hand-painted walls and ceilings, a fireplace, and an outdoor, barn–roof deck!
- The Brick Tavern Inn. A fine dining experience served in another old, historic building, the Brick Tavern Inn was established in 1818 and has been continually serving Quakertown residents since. The Brick Tavern Inn has an American–inspired menu set in an old-time dining room, along with a large, old wooden bar, fireplaces, and an outdoor dining option.
Anyone driving on Route 309 is very familiar with the Quakertown Antique Mall. Located in an old hosiery mill since 1997, the 12,000-square-foot antique mall has a variety of quality antiques, ranging from furniture to old prints, greeting cards, sheet music, china, glass, books, jewelry, candles, and much more.
